U.S. – FLAG MERCHANT MARINE
A strong U.S.-Flag Merchant Marine is essential to support U.S national defense and economic security interests in the 21st century. American sea power refers to the nation’s ability to use the seas for its own purposes. In peacetime, 95 percent of trade tonnage is waterborne. Yet, U.S.-flag ships carry only 2.7 percent of that trade.
